THE PARTICIPLE :--
The word 'Participle'is derived from a Latin
word 'Participare' which means 'to partake of'.
The Participle is a verbal adjective
qualifying noun but retaining some properties of verbs.
Definition :---
A Participle is that form of verb which partakes of the nature
both of a Verb and of an Adjective.
THREE GROUPS OF PARTICIPLES :--
1. Present Participle
2. Past Participle
3. Perfect Participle
1. PRESENT PARTICIPLE :--
The Present Participle is formed
by adding 'ing' to the verb.
It functions as an
Adjective; as,
* It is a
rolling stone.
* It is an
Interesting story.
2. PAST PARTICIPLE :--
The Past Participle is the third
form of the verb.
It acts as an Adjective or
Adverb; as,
* Indresh is a
learned man.
* Sita has a
broken slate.
3. PERFECT PARTICIPLE :--
The Perfect Participle is 'Having
+ third form of the Verb'; as,
* Having
reached the station, he purchased ticket.
* Having been
requested for some food, the lady helped the beggar.

USE OF THE PARTICIPLE :--
(i) The following verbs are followed
by the Present Participles :--
Set, start,
look. get, can / can't, imagin, smell, catch, keep, and have etc.
* Seema kept
me waiting.
* I looked
at him crossing the road.
(ii) The Present and Past Participles may be used both Attributely and Predicatively; as,
* A sleeping
partner is always harmful.
( Attributive )
* Indu saw
Richa
weeping.
( Predicative )
* A burnt child
dreads the
fire.
( Attributive )
* Hemant felt
delighted at the wonderful sight. ( Predicative )
(iii) Absolutely with a Noun or Pronoun going before; as,
* The sea being
smooth, we went for sail.
* God willing,
we shall have another good monsoon.
